The Empire style was developed in France during the 1800s and represents a late phase of neo-classicism. The style was much inspired by antique findings at an excavation of the Roman city of Pompeii, buried in an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The Swedish version of Empire style is known as the Karl Johan style, and developed when the French Empire reached Sweden. The style is characterized by tight, sparse shapes, which initially were of very dark dull colours but in its final stage evolved into brighter, lighter tones.
